The airport terminal is fairly modern and although small, is well equipped. It is situated at the northern end of the island, at least 40 minutes’ drive from most of the popular beach resort areas in the south. It is also convenient for the hour long transfer to Krabi or Khao Lak.
The building consists of two levels, with the departures typically on the second level. The check-in area can sometimes get busy in the high season and an early arrival is recommended. Here you will find several eateries, a bar, and a handful of shops selling convenience items, books and media (in English), local produce and souvenirs.
There is a left luggage facility, several ATMs, an exchange bureau, post office service and Muslim prayer room within the terminal, along with services suitable for disabled or hearing impaired people. A helpful information desk is centrally located and free information media such as tourist magazines and maps are distributed in the baggage collection area. A separate arrivals area is designated for international arrivals with passport control.
Shopping is limited here and there are no duty free shops as such, but tax refunds can be claimed at the airport if receipts are provided. Some time should be allowed for this process. Within the roomy departures lounge you will find several shops selling everything from silk and jewellery to gift souvenirs and fresh foods.
You still have to pay a small levy and occasionally need to insist on the meter, but they are reliable and safe. Those on a tight budget can wait for the hourly buses to depart for Phuket airport. The route south to Phuket town and the beach resort areas is straight forward and well sign-posted.
Parking: is free and usually available in the modest sized parking lot outside of the main terminal. It’s reasonably safe to park a vehicle here if you are going away and returning from Phuket.
