Ao Nang stretches over a kilometre of beachfront road, lined with shops, tour agents, restaurants and bars. It remains lively at night and venues stay open beyond midnight, but it’s not hectic and bustling like Patong Beach in Phuket. There aren’t any genuine discos; the entertainment is more refined, but it dœes also have its pockets of ‘girlie bars’, which are found in every tourist centre.

These are tucked away down back lanes which aren’t difficult to find but discreet enough for this otherwise family-orientated resort area. The girls are lively and friendly, the scene harmless and tolerated as an attraction for some.

If you are confined to a remote resort, such as those on Railay Beach, you’ll find the evenings rather boring. Youthful parties are also arranged or promoted at some of the down-market bars, which attract the budget and free spirited crowd.
