Krabi Travel Guide

Introduction

Overview & Introduction to Krabi
Krabi is a more down to earth than nearby Phuket and the fantastic natural scenery around Ao Nang and other resort areas are its main draw card. Far less developed and more family orientated than other resort areas - with its numerous day activities and relaxing environment, Krabi is particularly popular with continental Europeans and Scandinavians.
Most tourists head for the resort area of Ao Nang, while Ko Lanta to the south offers plenty more hotels and resorts. There is less accommodation on Phi Phi Don and some opt for the more genuine local atmosphere of Krabi Town, which sits on an estuary without any nearby beach.
From Ao Nang, you can admire the many small islands and rocky outcrops that are dotted offshore, offering some excellent daytrip escapes.
Within the area are numerous fantastic daytrips, such as the world famous Phi Phi island chain, with its stunning scenery of pristine beaches and turquoise waters, making it a favourite for divers, snorkellers and rock climbers.
The area is best enjoyed by day, with great beaches for relaxing, plenty of boating excursions, hiking and exploring. Rock climbing is particularly popular, as the limestone cliffs present ideal routes that have been marked out by local experts.
Kayaking is another rewarding activity among the islands and caves, while diving and snorkelling are ever popular across the Andaman coastline, with many reefs and suitable shallows that day tours and dive shops take advantage of.
The nightlife is much less of an attraction than some other centres in Thailand, but spas are highly popular. Krabi Town itself is the province capital and although it does cater to tourism, it gets a small proportion of the total visitors, servicing the locals instead.
Two airports service Krabi, with Krabi Airport receiving limited flights from Bangkok and Singapore. There are many more flight options to Phuket Airport, which is an hours’ drive away by private transfer. Buses also arrive frequently from Bangkok (a 12-hour journey) and Samui, among other destinations
