Ao Nang is lined with restaurants, some enjoying a seafront location, and they offer an international spread of cuisine, particularly to satisfy the tastes of the many continental Europeans and Scandinavian visitors, so expect excellent Swedish meatballs and roasted pig’s knuckle, ja!
In Ao Nang, you don’t have to look far for a place to eat, and many of the resort restaurants welcome outsiders. Krabi Town also has plenty of places to eat, some specifically catering to foreigners, but there are all sorts of options across town including some down to earth shop houses that enjoy steady local customers, with the Thais often enjoying a meal together in the evenings over a bottle of whisky and seldom cooking at home. Al fresco dining is the norm in Thailand and it seldom rains during the busy season.
Local cuisine
There are all sorts of Thai dishes, some which might be a little too unseal to an unfamiliar palate, but the popular choices include; Khang Khieo Wan (green curry) and Kaeng Pet (red spicy curry). Tom Yum (spicy, sour, salty and bitter blended soup curry) is a Thai favourite with prawns/shrimps, while Tom Kha (coconut, mushroom and galangal soup served best with chicken) is a mild choice.
Phed Med Ma Muang (chicken with cashew nuts and dried chilli) is also suitable for a non-spicy choice. There are numerous other variations including ginger, garlic, morning glory, tofu and local vegetables, but a favourite lunch filler among the Thais is Som Tam (a spicy unripened green papaya shred with chilli infusion, sun dried tomatoes and more).
There are many more dishes, along with exotic fruits and snacks worth trying and they are so cheap, you can afford to order and experiment.
