Krabi is best enjoyed by making daytrips to some of the fantastic scenery and islands along the coastline and the province boasts some of Thailand’s most spectacular scenery. Tour operators in Ao Nang and Krabi offer a variety of boat day tours that take in various sites offshore, and Phi Phi or Pha Nga Bay are a must on any visitor’s itinerary.
Phi Phi Island Archipelago: is one of Thailand’s most famous sites, certainly after featuring in the Hollywood blockbuster The Beach and taking a tragic leading role in the great Tsunami of 2004. Since then, the rampant over development on Phi Phi Don - the only island where inhabitation is allowed - has been wiped out and it has returned to a more natural state. You can stay on this lovely island, but most enjoy a day long tour of all of them.
There are several lovely bays here, perfect for swimming and snorkeling, but without any place to go ashore. Several other smaller islands are popular dive spots, or reached by private charter for the ultimate in privacy.
Pha Nga Bay: is an incredible seascape theatre consisting of hundreds of karst pillars dotted across this large bay. It is an extremely photogenic day out, with trips to the distinct James Bond Island (featured in The Man with the Golden Gun) and lunch at the fishing village of Koh Phan Yee, built on stilts in the mud flats. Kayaking trips among the many sea caves is a popular activity.
Yao Island: is one of the least developed of the islands in the area and have limited resorts and some lovely beaches that boast the best off-shore views in the area. Two ferries a day depart for Yao Noi - the more inhabited island, and it’s best to plan an overnight stay here to escape the tourists.
Ko Lanta: is a popular destination in itself and too far to realistically be a daytrip. Ferries sail twice a day from Krabi Town, taking 3 hours. Most people come here to stay at the many lovely resorts that enjoy fine beaches and a less frenetic pace than other tourist centres in the region.
Phuket: is a whole experience in itself and although it’s a mere 90-minute drive to the main resort areas, you’ll struggle to see all of it in a day. However, the drive here is scenic, and within a single day you can drive the perimeter of the island, get a taste of its famous resort areas and enjoy the pretty coastline. It boasts numerous restaurants and activities.
