By air: visiting Samui is convenient and easy. The fastest way is unquestionably by air. Samui has its own airport so you can fly directly from Bangkok and get to the island hassle-free. The only airline that flies to Samui Airport is Bangkok Air, taking about one hour.
Thai Airways also flies to Surat Thani but you have to take a bus or taxi to ferry. If you arrive in the evening, you might want to spend one night in Surat Thani first and get to the ferry port in the morning.
By train: travelling to Samui by train is also another good option since you can take an over night sleeper. The journey takes about 12 hours. It is advisable to book the train in advance and bring a light sweater with you. Food is provided on the train at a reasonable cost.. A variety of food is also sold at the train stations when the train stops from time to time. The station at Phun Phin is as close as you get to Samui and from here transfers are efficient to the ferry terminal, sometimes via Surat Thani town.
By ferry: the fastest ferry from main operators like Seatran and Raya Ferry, leaves from the two main piers in Donsak on the mainland. The journey takes about two hours. Alternatively, you can also take the Lomprayah ferry from Chumpon which is up the isthmus nearer Bangkok. A ferry containing vehicles are also available and fully-equipped with a small snack bar, wide pontoon for sunbathing and air-conditioned cabin.
Ferries mostly arrive at the commercial centre of Na Thon on the west side of the island including services from Koh Phan Ngan. There is also a service between Bophut and Haad Rin.
By car: Surat Thani can be most conveniently reached by car from Bangkok by taking Highway 4 (Buddha Monthon Road) to Nakhon Pathom, and then to Chumphon via Phetchaburi, Hua Hin and Chumphon. Then, you can drive onto Highway 401. Once you reach Surat Thani, head to Don Sak where your vehicles can be carried to the island by a car ferry.
