There is an alarming rate of accidents on the hilly coastal roads an reckless local drivers so visitors should take care and always wear a helmet. Unfortunately a local taxi mafia have seen to it that fares aren’t terrible good value either and often you’ll have a hard time getting them to use their meters, especially from the airport.
Walking: most people just choose to walk if they want to go somewhere near. However, if walking is your choice, make sure you wear enough sunscreen as the sun can be very strong.
Motorbike: alternatively, you can rent a motorbike, which is quite popular on Samui. There are many kinds of motorbikes to choose from ranging from Harley Davidsons to 100cc Honda Dreams. The latter are ideal and easy to ride.
Car: if exploring an island is on your itinerary, you can opt for a jeep or a car. A jeep is a better option if you want to drive up into the hill as the roads there are not well-maintained.
Taxi (metered): taxis are now available operating around the island. However, make sure the driver activates the meter. Often they will refuse and you end up bargaining for an inflated fee. This is unfortunately one of the less savoury aspects of Samui.
Also, some upscale hotels provide shuttle bus services and boats if you want to visit other islands or places nearby. Simply contact the information desk and ask for the details of these services.
