Koh Pha Ngan Travel Guide

Activities

Activities in Koh Pha Ngan
Full moon parties: are undoubtedly the island’s most famous activity, drawing people from all over the world and making the island famous. The parties themselves are well organised, with plenty of police presence too. They usually occur on the full moon night along the eastern beach of Haad Rin, with several sound systems lined up along the mile long bay.
There is generally a festival atmosphere for several days leading up to the party. It’s sometimes wise to stay elsewhere on the island and taxi in for the night, but arrive early to avoid the traffic jam.
Exploring the island: by motor bike is highly recommended, for there is plenty more beauty to this island than the beaches and babes at the full moon party! Most of the resort areas will have bike hire facilities available, and an off-road or hybrid bike will give you more freedom to explore the rugged dirt roads in the mountainous centre.
The most obvious route is the road over to Tong Naay Pan bay in the northwest, a rollercoaster ride through virgin jungle which is rewarding. The less adventurous can tackle the flats among the coconut groves on the west side, which offers a glimpse into the traditional lives of Thai island farmers.
There are also several waterfalls, the two most accessible and visited being Phaeng (and Phaeng Noi) in the island’s centre - an area that includes the Marble Buddha image - and Paradise Falls on the road to Chaloklum bay. There is also a pretty lake, Laem Son, near Seethanu bay.
Hiking and adventure sports: are numerous on the island. There are several good hikes which are marked on the widely available Guide Map to Koh Pha Ngan, and the route from Haad Rin over the hills to the small bays at Haad Yuan and Haad Thian are challenging but rewarding, and you can catch the boat back.
Water sports: include kayaking, sailing, wake boarding, fishing, and diving and snorkelling (mentioned earlier). By enquiring with tour operators at each tourist beach you’ll be able to arrange an adventure with one of several adventure companies.
They know several good mountain biking trials in the hills, organise kayaking along the calmer west coast or from Tong Nai Phan to Bottle beach, or take off on fishing excursions. Sailing is another good way to see this and nearby islands from the water and a few day-charters are advertised with local tour bookers.
The Haad Thian and Haad Yuan area is a popular hideaway with the well known Sanctuary based here. There are also spas found at the main each areas.
Ang Thong Marine Park: a day trip here is highly recommended, for this unique archipelago is within an hour’s boat ride of Koh Pha Ngan and boasts hidden lagoons, pristine beaches, great hiking, excellent snorkelling and nice break from the tourists. It served as the geographical inspiration for the setting of the Hollywood blockbuster The Beach.
