Watersports are one of the main attractions, but there are also plenty of hiking trails, points of natural beauty, and fun activities such as elephant riding, ATV racing and biking. Of course there are also leisure activities such as spa treatments, cooking courses and more, but overall the scope is less than on the bigger islands like Phuket.
Diving and snorkelling: exploring the colourful marine life of the waters around Koh Chang is extremely rewarding and popular and diving attracts a lot of enthusiasts to Thailand. Koh Chang is less busy than other centres and certainly in a pristine state, with numerous offshore reefs.
Elephant trekking: is always a popular and unique activity in Thailand and there are two camps on the islands that offer rides and daily shows that allow you to feed the friendly elephants. Exploring the lush jungle is done best on the back of one of these enormous beasts but the ride isn’t exactly comfortable.
Hiking: is very rewarding on this particular island and there are a variety of trails, some easy ones following the coast, others that pierce the jungle to the waterfalls and even some really challenging treks that traverse the highlands over to the East coast.
Spas: provide an opportunity to pamper yourself for the day and the Thai are excellent at massage and body therapeutics. Spas are found all over Thailand now and are great value, although the choice on Koh Chang is more limited. Thai massage is also worthwhile, especially after a day of activities and many small shops near the busy centres offer one or two hour programmes at very affordable rates.
Eating and drinking: presents excellent value in Thailand and a highlight of your visit to this island is to enjoy spicy Thai food, or fresh seafood and endless cheap cocktails at one of many beachfront bars and restaurants.
