Khon Kaen National Museum: is located on Lang Soon Rachakarn road. It is the only National Museum in the Northeast region, boasting the exhibitions on history, art and archaeology. There are also impressive displays featuring the geography and geology of pre-historic periods, including utensils, burial rituals and major archaeological findings; as well as ancient cities and communities.
There are also displays on the important Dvaravadi culture as found in the Isaan region. The museum is open to public from Wednesday to Sunday between 9:00 and 16:00, and is closed on public holidays.
Phu Wiang National Park: covers 380 square metres in Si Chomphu district and Chum Phae district. This place is famous among locals and visitors, boasting major discovery of dinosaurs’ bones and an array of fossils. There are many sites to be seen where geologists and scientists found the fossils of several kinds of dinosaurs.
You can also see some traces of ancient civilization, such as a relief of the reclining Buddha on the cliffside, and caves with paintings done by cavemen. The park also offers scenic views of mountains, valleys, waterfalls and many kinds of wild flowers.
Wat Sa Bua Kaew: located at Ban Wang Khun, is a temple with many beautiful mural and sculptural works. Both sides of the stairway leading to the ordination hall feature crouching guardian lion replicas. It is interesting to note that it was, in fact, Luangpho Phui, the preceptor of the temple, who created all these fascinating sculptures. The murals on the walls of the ordination display the lifestyle and history of the Lord Buddha.
Wat Nong Wang: is another notable temple in Khon Kaen if you want to take a walk in a peaceful atmosphere. Situated south of the city on Klangmuang road, this temple offers a picturesque view of the city and Kaen Nakhon Lake from the nine-tired balcony surrounding the outside of the temple.
