By air: the international airport receives some 15 flights a day from Bangkok and several arrivals a week from Phuket, Samui, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Mandalay, Chittakong and Southern China.
The emergence of budget airlines offering the 1-hour flight for under 2,000 baht (one way) has made this one of the most popular and convenient means of reaching the city. A new international terminal is scheduled to open in early 2007, and taxis into the nearby city are reasonably-priced and widely available.
By bus: there are almost hourly departures from Bangkok’s Mo Chit Bus Station as well as from points near Khao San road. These are cheaper and slightly quicker than the train, but still take 10 hours minimum and are less comfortable for overnight journeys. Movies and refreshments are served onboard and the air conditioning is usually very ‘aggressive’, so bring a sweater.
Buses ply various routes to Chiang Mai from all over Northern Thailand including from Chiang Khong on the Mae Khong River, which is a popular entry point from Laos for backpackers. Hourly services also run to and from Pai - another mecca for the free-spirited crowd.
