Spas and massages: have opened up all over the city in recent years and there are literally dozens to choose from. Quality, atmosphere and price all vary, but most do a good job of pampering you in a serene environment, usually typified by boutique gardens, water features and soothing sounds away from the bustle of the city.
The Thais are masters at massage, body scrub, detox programmes and other beauty techniques and a day spent at one of these hideaways is money well spent. In fact, Chiang Mai is perhaps one of the world’s best value spa destinations.
Shopping: provides a popular activity away from the demanding sightseeing schedule, and apart from the legendary Night Bazaar and Baan Tawai handicrafts village, there are boutique decor shops around the city centre such as along Thapae road.
The lane at Nimminhemin soi 1 specialises in house and home, while two large malls, Kad Suan Kaew and Airport Plaza have an amazing selection of contemporary goods and fashions at knock-down prices. For the true Asian experience, there are also the local markets at Wororot (clothes) and Sompet (food).
Eating out: join the locals for endless relaxation over food that takes place at numerous, entertaining, restaurants across the city, where food is consumed communally with friends in a leisurely fashion.
