Most of these places provide a variety of good food and creative cocktails. After that, you can move on and enjoy the excitement at the clubs and bars. There is also, of course, the girlie bars for which the city is well-known and although they are a turn-off to many, a large portion of visitors still consider these areas to be part of the city’s attractions.
Sukhumvit is probably the most vibrant and lively area when it comes to pubbing and clubbing in Bangkok. Starting from the beginning of Sukhumvit road, Sukhumvit Soi 11 is home to some trendy bars. The middle Sukhumvit area, including Ekkamai and Thong Lor, has a great number of clubs playing Thai songs and mainstream hip-hop. This area is famous among Thai partygoers and the drinks can be quite pricey.
Since this area is also the main focus for the expats in Bangkok, it has the largest selection of good pubs, showing live music and sport on screens, serving beer on tap and offering a refined atmosphere. The Vertigo bar, 61 storeys up on top of the Banyan Tree hotel, has gorgeous views of the city.
The well known Soi Cowboy (Sukhumvit 21) is packed with many outdoor bars where you can find girls in skimpy little numbers. Once the girl sits down with you, you will have to buy her a drink. Hanky-panky business usually takes place here, so choose wisely whether you want to visit this place or not.
Apart from Sukhumvit road, visitors also enjoy their evenings around Silom and the Khao San road. Silom Soi 4 is home to many small bars and friendly clubs while Silom Soi 2 is one big gay community, with gay bars scattered in the tiny lane. Several intimate clubs are found here as well as the infamous Patpong lanes, which have been full of go-go bars since the 1960s.
The well-known sex shows are also located here, though they are seldom worth the inflated drink prices and usually just attract the curious. The area is also full of night vendors and has some excellent regular pubs.
It’s bohemian and ‘dreadlocked’, but certainly busy and a fascinating eye-opener with its masses of free-spirited travellers. There are not many jazz and blue bars in Bangkok, but you can find some in the hotels and a few along Khao San road. Locals usually go to Brown Sugar on Sarasin road and the Saxophone near the Victory Monument.
Evening shopping is a mild alternative and the many malls in the city centre (Siam Square area) have first-class movie houses showing movies with English soundtrack.
