Introduction to Udon Thani, Thailand
The main gateway between Thailand and Laos is Udon Thani, a useful stopover for travellers cruising this circuit of Southeast Asia. Despite being Thailand's fourth-largest city, there isn't much of interest here for visitors. It has the usual array of Thai restaurants, pubs and shops, but only a few amenities that cater to western tastes. This situation appeals to many travellers, however, who linger for a while before crossing the Friendship Bridge into Laos. The Bronze Age excavation at Ban Chiang, to the east of city, is an interesting site, and a rarity for Thailand. It makes a nice day outing, as does a hike around Phu Phrabat National Park Phu Foi Lom Eco-Park. Just west of Udon Thani's train station is the night market, the most interesting attraction in the city and the perfect place to experiment with unusual Isaan street food.
