Thailand’s easternmost province, Ubon Ratchathani, borders Laos and Cambodia along the Mekong River, an area known as the Emerald Triangle because of its immense monsoon forests. Each July, thousands of visitors descend upon the province’s capital, also named Ubon Ratchathani, during the city’s Candle Festival. During the festival, a procession of people carrying elaborately carved candles parades through the city to Thung Si Mueang Park to commemorate the beginning of Buddhist Lent. This is also the only time of year when hotels in Ubon Ratchathani are hard to find. Throughout the rest of the year, Ubon Ratchathani hotels in the city are usually easy to locate, of a good quality and quite affordable. Rooms in Ubon Ratchathani hotels are generally basic and clean with many modern conveniences like Western flush toilets, showers with hot water and television sets. Kaeng Tana National Park rents guesthouses for tourists but visitors to Pha Taem National Park need to supply their own tents. Phu Chong Na Yoi National Park, bordering Cambodia and Laos, also has guesthouses for rent, but those who want to use the park’s camping grounds are required to provide their own tents.
