Introduction to Ubon Ratchathani - City Centre
The city of Ubon Ratchathani is in eastern Thailand's Isaan region. It is 80kms from the country's border with southern Laos. Many overland travellers use the city as a stopover point before crossing the border at Chong Mek for Pakse in Laos. The city centre in Ubon Ratchathani is an ambient location that is not as busy as some Thai cities, but without any major tourist draws. The central area is on the north side of the Mun River and most Ubon Ratchathani City Centre hotels are sited in this locality. The city's airport is nearby and the station, with nightly sleeper services from Bangkok, is located on the opposite side of the Mun. Eateries in the area serve Thai cuisine, Korean barbecues and pizzas. Thung Si Muang Park is in the middle of the city and is home to an iconic 20m high candle sculpture as well as a number of monuments.
