Introduction to Trat - Koh Mak
One of Thailand's best kept secrets is the secluded island of Koh Mak, which is part of the eastern province of Trat and only a few kilometres south of the much more developed island of Koh Chang. During the 1990s, there were only a few Koh Mak hotels but today, the island boasts over 20 different places to stay, from luxury retreats to basic budget bungalows. The island is flat and small with jungle that can easily be explored on foot or by bicycle. It takes roughly three hours to cycle through the three fishing villages, countless rubber tree plantations, jungle tracks, and white sandy beach coastline on Koh Mak. The waters surrounding the island are calm, clear and crystal blue, and when the tide is low, visitors can easily walk to the even more secluded and privately owned island of Koh Kham. The island contains more than 10,000 palm trees, an ancient temple and numerous places to snorkel or scuba dive.
