Introduction to Sukhothai - Outskirts
Sukhothai is a historical town and former capital of the Sukhothai kingdom in north-central Thailand. The ruins in the old part of the city are spread over several acres and are famed throughout Southeast Asia. There is a fine choice of Sukhothai hotels for visitors, and these vary from simple guesthouses in traditional wooden buildings to modern edifices that supply guests with full amenities and services. The smaller hotels in Sukhothai tend to be close to the medieval ruins in what is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The stately old ruins feature gems such as the Saphan Hin and Si Sawai temples as well as lofty columns and Buddha statues that include Phra Achana. The relics and displays in the museum at the front entrance of the main historical park provide tourists with an insight into the history of the ancient kingdom. The new part of the town is around 10kms away and is the location of the bigger Sukhothai hotels.
