Introduction to Sukhothai - Old City
Sukhothai Old City is a fascinating area of northern Thailand which holds much cultural importance. It can be accessed by taking a bus from Bangkok or cities in the north of Thailand. The area was once the capital of Thailand, but nowadays it lies in ruins some 10kms outside of the new city of Sukhothai. Visitors to Sukhothai Old City will be presented with two sections of ruins - the central zone and the north zone. In the central zone, there are over 10 destroyed buildings interspersed with golden Buddha statues which have recently been restored. The north zone contains a few temples, the most impressive of which is Wat Sri Chum, which has a giant Buddha. There are food vendors selling local snacks and meals dotted throughout the area.
