Introduction to Ratchaburi, Thailand
Historically important and culturally intact, the quiet town of Ratchaburi is the ideal place to take a look at Thai culture without the interference of tourism. The town and its surrounding province lie just to the west of Bangkok, making it easy to reach as a daytrip or a lingering stay thanks to the many Ratchaburi hotels conveniently situated right in the heart of town. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is the main attraction here. Every morning, dozens of vendors in their traditional wooden boats and broad straw hats take to the canals of Ratchaburi to sell fresh produce, tasty Thai food and other interesting items. It’s both a tourist attraction and a local mainstay but for a really in-depth experience, hire a private boat and leisurely cruise among these unique shopkeepers. The Rose Garden is another great spot to catch a traditional Thai dance and music performance or just learn a bit more about the local culture. Although it’s just 80kms from Bangkok, Ratchaburi is well worth lingering for a couple of days to really soak in the old-style atmosphere.
