Introduction to Phuket - Mai Khao Beach
While the majority of beaches in Phuket have undergone extensive development, especially in the face of the 2004 Tsunami, Mai Khao Beach is an exception. Many visitors come to this part of the island to escape the crowds of people at the busier resorts. The area is, in fact, part of a national park, created to protect the giant sea turtle. Visitors will get used to seeing these creatures, especially between February and August when they lay their eggs on the beach. The beach itself is dangerous at this time of year, which is Phuket's monsoon season, and the big waves should be a warning to those considering swimming in the sea. For the rest of the year, the sea is less tempestuous and Mai Khao Beach is ideal for sunbathing or swimming. This area of the Thai island has a water park, making it an excellent location for families. The airport is located close by, meaning Mai Khao Beach hotels are a mixture of accommodation for people in transit and those looking to unwind at elegant and quiet beach resorts.
