Introduction to Phuket - Koh Kaew
The giant Buddha statue standing guard over the tiny island of Koh Kaew can easily be seen from the viewpoint of Phromthep Cape at Phuket's southernmost tip. Although the smaller island is just one kilometre south of Phromthep Cape, the easiest way to reach this isolated island is a four-kilometre long-tail boat journey from Rawai Beach. Although there are a few Koh Kaew hotels, most of the island's current visitors are Buddhist monks seeking a secluded and peaceful retreat. Some monks have permanent homes here and the island includes a small beach. According to legend, the Buddha set foot on this tiny island before heading on to Rawai. In addition to the huge Buddha statue with two mythical snakes called Naga wrapped around its platform, a smaller shrine stands upon the northern tip of the island, above a series of steep steps. Those able to reach the final rock will encounter the Buddha's footprint. Visit our Phuket Travel Guide
