Introduction to Phuket - Phuket City
Phuket City is the capital of the Thai island and province which shares its name. Although many island visitors do not rank the island's capital city among their top places to visit, Phuket City hotels are cheaper than their beach resort counterparts and the city offers plenty of attractions for visitors seeking breaks from the beach. Brightly-coloured houses and shops with Mediterranean-influenced architecture dominate the city's old town. The Courthouse and Provincial Hall both have Sino-Portuguese architecture, while intricate Chinese fretwork carvings adorn the wooden doors of many Dibuk Road shops. Put Jaw, built more than two centuries ago, is the city's oldest Chinese Taoist temple, which is connected to a more modern annex called Jui Tui. The Thaihua Museum tells the fascinating story of the island's Chinese community. Mongkol Nimit is a Thai-style temple with colourful glass tiles. A bronze statue of a former provincial governor, a health park, several restaurants and a breathtaking city view can all be found at the Khao Rang Hill summit.Visit our Phuket Travel Guide
