The province of Phrae in Northern Thailand is completely surrounded by mountains in the Yom River valley. Its capital city, also known as Phrae, is home to several historic temples and Phrae hotels. Most Phrae hotels are low budget accommodations with squat toilets which don’t receive many foreign tourists, but mid-range hotels in Phrae are easily available, if limited. Hotels in Phrae outside the capital city are scarcer still, except in the province’s Doi Pha Klong, Wiang Ko Sai, and Mae Yom national parks. Wiang Ko Sai National Park includes many spectacular waterfalls and steep mountains, while Doi Pha Klong’s main attractions include fascinating caves and the beautiful limestone Hin Pakarang Mountain. Bungalows, terrace houses, and dormitories are available for rent at both Wiang Ko Sai and Doi Pha Klong, but Doi Pha Klong campers must provide their own tents. Visitors to Mae Yom National Park may bring their own camping tents or rent one of the unique floating houses along the scenic Yom River.
