Located in central Northern Thailand and sharing a tiny border with Laos, the province of Phitsanulok is filled with unique wildlife, historic temples and four national parks. The province’s capital, also named Phitsanulok, is one of Thailand’s oldest cities and once briefly served as the country’s capital but most Phitsanulok hotels in the city are low budget guesthouses. However, mid-range Phitsanulok hotels are also available for a much cheaper cost than similar accommodations in Chiang Mai or Bangkok. The city of Phitsanulok remains relatively unspoiled by tourism but most of its buildings were destroyed in a fire more than 50 years ago. However, the Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, the city’s most important temple and home to one of Thailand’s most significant Buddha figures, Phra Buddha Chinnarat, remains standing. Most Phitsanulok hotels located outside of the city are found in Amphoe Wang Thong, home to two out of four national parks in Phitsanulok. Bungalows and campsites can be rented at Thung Salaeng Luang National Park but Kaeng Chet Khwae National Park visitors must bring their own tents. Thung Salaeng Luang National Park’s three tiered Kaeng Sopha Waterfall, Thailand’s answer to Niagara Falls, is an especially stunning sight.
