Little visited Phayao has a limited selection of mid-range hotels catering to the few bus tours that pass through. Independent international visitors are few and far between so most budget hotels are geared towards Thai clientele, but this can net international visitors a bargain when it come to finding a cheap room. Most are situated close to Phayao Lake, the centrepiece of the town. There are a few relatively new choices right on the shore but the majority of Phayao accommodations are located close to the bus station. They are adequate for short stays but lack any real character or facilities. The best way to pass time in Phayao is by dining at one of the lakefront restaurants while enjoying the mountain scenery. Outside of town, hotels are harder to find and usually come in the form of homestays. Staying with the locals is perhaps the best way to gain insight into this remote corner of Thailand.
