Introduction to Mae Hong Son - City Centre
Mae Hong Son is one of those small Thai towns to have kept much of its character while expanding the facilities available to tourists. Getting into this northwestern corner of the country is easy enough with flights from Bangkok, and nearby seasonal routes from Chiang Mai. The scenic winding road runs over the mountains from Chiang Mai, so there are a few options to get to stay in Mae Hong Son hotels. For years this was a backpacker location for trekking trips but there have been some good developments in the city centre. Many of the cheaper places are still around the market and the Jong Kham Lake. Nothing is too far away in Mae Hong Son, which is one of its great attractions. Its worth noting that some of the hotels marked up as Mae Hong Son are actually in Pai, which is a good distance away and certainly nowhere near the city centre.
