Introduction to Lopburi, Thailand

Three hours north of Bangkok is the historic city of Lopburi, located in Thailand’s Chao Phraya Basin region. A low key destination, Lopburi is an ideal getaway from the congestion and pollution of Thailand’s bustling capital, Bangkok. One of the oldest cities in the Kingdom, Lopburi was the second capital after Ayutthaya. There are two areas in the city, Old Town and New Town. Most of the key landmarks, including the train station, can be found in the Old Town, from where access to a number of hotels in Lopburi is easy for those arriving via train. This area is almost overrun by monkeys, especially around Phra Kaan Shrine and Phra Prang Sam Yot. A walking tour of the ruins is entirely possible within a day or two. Visitors are often enthralled by the Khmer influences in the architecture and intricate carvings. A number of Lopburi hotels have metal fences around their buildings as it is not uncommon for monkeys to scale the fences and walls outside hotel windows.
