Introduction to Loei - Dan Sai
Dan Sai is a district in the Thai province of Loei, about two hours by bus from the city of the same name. Many visitors to the district fly in to nearby Udon Thani, where they can hire a car. The district hosts one of the northeast's best festivals, although many travellers are blissfully unaware of its existence. Each year during the Ghost Festival, revellers dress up in gaudy masks and parade down the main street in the town centre. This often drunken revelry is meant to frighten evil spirits and can sometimes end in what seems like chaos to the uninitiated. Dan Sai hotels are often busy at this time. Other district attractions include Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, famed for its steep, mountain scenery. The park offers a cool retreat from the well-known Thai humidity, with temperatures rarely exceeding 25°C. The best views can be found from Phu Man Kaho, the park's highest mountain. More cool respite can be found in Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary, in the southeast of Dan Sai.
