A place to witness Thai culture away from the packs of tourists is Korat, around 160kms from Bangkok. The gateway to the region of Issan, Korat use to be a chief US Airforce base through the course of the Vietnam War. Nowadays, Korat is an active industrial city, with nightlife and night bazaars similar to that of Bangkok. There are lots of appealing historical attractions in Korat. Staying in hotels in Korat allows you to temples around the city, ranging from Wat Phra Narai Maharat, home to a Khmer statue of Vishnu and Korat’s city pillar, to Wat Sala Loi with its famous chapel that is in the shape of a junk. A national museum holds Khmer artefacts and masonry. Hotels in Korat vary in price and size; you can find an upmarket hotel or a cheaper simple inn. It’s a good idea to spend at least a night in a hotel in Korat as a visit to Prasat Hin Phmai National Historical Park, which is a 60kms from Korat centre, offers an impressive look at Khmer ruins from the 10th to the 11th century. Easily the best hotels in Korat are at Khao Yai National Park, which offers a great look at one of the world’s finest rainforest with 2000sq kms of flora and fauna.
