Introduction to Khon Kaen, Thailand
The urban centre of Thailand's wild and wooly region of Isaan is Khon Kaen. It's one of the country's newer cities, at just two centuries old, but it still has plenty to offer the traveller in search of the face of Thailand minus the tourism. This isn't a popular tourist destination so don't expect many western amenities. Most of the restaurants, bars and shops cater to local Thais. But that's the charm of Khon Kaen. At the heart of the city is the City Pillar Shrine, where random civic activities and events take place. A handful of Buddhist temples can be explored, and the decent Khon Kaen National Museum offers a detailed look into the deepest history of the Isaan region, which has ancient connections with the Khmer civilisation. Several night markets are great places to try the local street food and hang out with the locals, and the silk products here are well respected. Khon Kaen hotels aren't particularly impressive but there are plenty to choose from in the city centre. Visit our Khon Kaen Travel Guide
