Introduction to Chiang Rai, Thailand
Holding the fort in the far northern reaches of Thailand is the small city of Chiang Rai. For independent travellers with a vehicle, there is a lot to see and do in northern Thailand, and this tidy little city makes an ideal base for exploring the temples, villages and natural scenery of this region. The centre of the city, around the bus station, is where most of the shops, bars and restaurants are located. There is a pleasant night market here with outdoor restaurants, handicraft stalls and traditional music and dance performances. Most Chiang Rai hotels are also clustered around this area. Several lovely Buddhist temples are open to the public, including Wat Phra Kaew with its Emerald Buddha and Wat Klong Wiang with its excellent examples of Lanna design. Chiang Rai is at the heart of Thailand's hill tribe country, so a visit to the Hilltribe Museum is a good place to get started before heading out to find an authentic hill tribe village. On the city's outskirts is Wat Rong Khun, or the White Temple, which is an interesting contemporary temple by a local artist. Visit our Chiang Rai Travel Guide
