Introduction to Chiang Rai - Mae Sai
Part of Thailand's 'Golden Triangle' circuit and a stepping stone into neighbouring Burma, Mae Sai is one of the most visited areas in Chiang Rai and sees thousands of tourists each year. It is the most northerly city in Thailand and sits along the southern banks of the Ruak River, surrounded by hills. The important Wat Phra That Wai Dao temple can be found here as well as a Burmese temple, and both are well worth seeing. Many travellers stay in Mae Sai while touring the 'Golden Triangle' and there are a number of Mae Sai hotels to be found here. The city is ideally located for those wanting to enjoy this area of Chiang Rai and its cheap shopping before continuing on their journey. From here, it is possible to visit neighbouring Tachileik, Burma, for a daytrip and enjoy the casino, shop for local handicrafts and visit Shwedagon Paya, the town's main stupa.
