Introduction to Chiang Rai - Golden Triangle
Chiang Rai Golden Triangle is located in northeastern Thailand, where the Thailand, Burma and Laos borders meet along the Mekong River. It is possible to get a day pass to cross into Laos over the river, where there is a casino. The main attraction in this area is the Hall of Opium museum. Considered to be one of the best museums in the kingdom, it was established by the Queen's Mae Fah Luang Foundation and showcases the history and plight of opium. The museum is part of the large Mae Fah Luang University. Along the Mekong River, visitors will find numerous temples and Buddha statues as well as a golden Buddha on a treasure ship. The are plenty of shopping opportunities along the main road, where it is possible to pick up handicrafts. The region is also known for its great coffee and tea, which are good souvenirs.
