Introduction to Chiang Mai - San Kamphaeng
One of the reasons tourists visit Chiang Mai's San Kamphaeng is for the large number of arts and craft centres in the area. It is essentially a handicraft village with shops stretching out along the main road. In these shops, it is possible to watch the craftsmen make their crafts before purchasing. Tourists usually come away with silk, jewellery or ceramics, although it is possible to buy larger items such as furniture. Also in San Kamphaeng are hot springs set among beautiful gardens. It is cheap to bathe in the spring waters, which possess medicinal qualities. There are not many San Kamphaeng hotels, with tourists usually visiting the area as part of a daytrip from Chiang Mai city to buy souvenirs. It is better to stay in the city since there are more attractions there. San Kamphaeng has several locally-run restaurants which serves dishes that originate from the north of Thailand.
