Introduction to Chiang Mai - Old City
Chiang Mai was first established more than 700 years ago, and most of the old walls which surrounded Chiang Mai centuries ago remain standing today, defining the area known as the old city. Most Old City hotels are small and unique boutique establishments which blend in wonderfully with their ancient surroundings. All four original city gates still stand and the entrance to the eastern gate of Thapae has been pedestrianised, making Thapae Gate an ideal place to begin exploring the old city on foot. Chiang Mai's oldest temple, Wat Chaing Man, is just one of more than 30 ancient temples here, and most of the monks at many of these temples are glad to welcome respectful foreign visitors. The impressive Three King's Monument stands in front of the Chiang Mai City Art and Cultural Centre, whose exhibits depict the city's culture and history in great detail. The moat, which was originally built to protect Chiang Mai from invading armies, now contains beautiful fountains which are lit up each night. Visit our Chiang Mai Travel Guide
