Introduction to Chiang Mai - Doi Suthep
Chiang Mai's Doi Suthep is the highest point of the city, about 1,676m at the peak. It is part of a large national park which was established in 1981. From the peak of the mountain, visitors will have the best vistas of the city. Adventurous visitors can walk or ride a bicycle up the winding road to the top. However, most opt to take a songtaew (shared taxi) from the foothills on Huay Kaew Road to the peak. The ride takes about 20 minutes. On the top of the hill, visitors will find the imposing Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep temple. Just around the corner from the temple is the Bhuping Palace, the Thai royal family's winter palace. The palace is open for visitors when the royal family is not in residence. There is also a jade factory and many stalls selling souvenirs and trinkets at the temple's entrance. There are no Doi Suthep hotels, with the nearest accommodation in the city's downtown area.Visit our Chiang Mai Travel Guide
