Introduction to Chiang Mai - Chiang Dao
Chiang Dao is a small village located one hour north of the Thai city of Chiang Mai by bus. It is surrounded by spectacular limestone mountains which offer some interesting activities. The major activity here is caving and five kilometres outside of the village are five limestone caverns which can be accessed by the public. It is best to tour these caves and their amazing stalagmite formations and Buddhist shrines with a guide. The mountains form part of Chiang Dao National Park, where visitors come for trekking in the mountains, with the highest peak 2,200 metres high. There are trekking operators in the village and treks are led by local guides who are often members of a hill tribe. Elephant riding and rafting also take place on each trek. Chiang Dao also has waterfalls and hot springs which are possible to bathe in. Chiang Dao hotels are modest, with some properties consisting of individual bamboo huts.
