Introduction to Chiang Mai - Chang Phuak
Chiang Mai's Chang Phuak, an area frequented by students, sits to the north of the old city. As a result of its student population, the district features many bars and restaurants aimed at young people, while one of Chiang Mai's biggest shopping malls, Kad Suan Kaew, is located in the area. Chang Phuak has become one of the trendier areas of the city, with tourists coming here primarily to eat and drink rather than visit places of cultural interest. Within easy reach of the district is Chiang Mai Zoo, a short drive to the west and where visitors can see Thailand's only pandas, on loan from China. The district offers many songthaew, a form of local transport, which are able to take visitors to places outside of the city, such as Doi Suthep, the area's most famous mountain featuring one of the country's most significant temples.
