Bangkok became the capital of Thailand in 1782, at the same time when Rattanakosin era started. General Taksin emerged as the leader of the Siamese, helping them to regroup after the fall of Ayuthaya, and crowned himself King Buddha Yodfa Chulalok Maharaj (posthumously named King Rama I) as the first king in the Chakri dynasty for the glorious Rattanakosin. He also relocated the capital to the present day greater Bangkok area.
