Thousands of years ago, the city of Taipei was nothing more than a lake. Climatic changes caused the lake to dry up leaving an area that was full of swamps and grass. The Han Chinese arrived here over 300 years ago and built a settlement. Immigrants from Fukien Province soon arrived and began to farm at Takala.
