January Festivals
Founding Day: is celebrated to commemorate Dr Sun Yat Sen’s inauguration as the country’s first president. There are colourful parades, lion and dragon dances as well as traditional dances and music. At night you will see spectacular firework displays, and listen to patriotic speeches.
February Festivals
Yangmingshan Flower Festival: lasts for a month and is held in seven locations throughout the city: Fulin Park, Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin Residence, Shuangxi Park, Lin Yutang House, Center, Qianshan Park, Flowers and Plants Experiment, Yangming Park.
March Festivals
The Taipei Traditional Art Festival (TTAF): held every spring this festival focuses on traditional arts in Taiwan. There are hundreds of performances to watch including, dance, drama, music, acrobatics and much more.
April Festivals
Shang Yuan (Lantern Festival): children carry lanterns to temples throughout the city. These lanterns bear pictures of the legendary heroes, beasts and animals which celebrate the birthday of the God of Heaven. The biggest lantern gatherings are held at the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hal where you will find games, fireworks and religious celebrations.
Armed Forces Day: is celebrated to honour all the divisions of military and to recognise their bravery and sacrifices which they made in honour of the country. There are parades and drills taking place city-wide.
Dragon Boat Festival: centres around Chu Yuan, a famous poet, who was a court official. When Chu Yuan’s loyalty was questioned, he was humiliated and drowned himself in the river. The villagers, who loved and respected Chu Yuan, immediately got into their boats to rescue him, but were unsuccessful. The Dragon Boat Festival commemorates this event with boat races.
