Introduction to Nantou, Taiwan
A large and lightly populated county in Taiwan's central highlands, Nantou is the only part of the island that is not on the sea. It is nonetheless a popular tourist destination for Taiwanese and foreign visitors. Undeveloped natural beauty is the appeal. Nantou contains several nature preserves, most notably Sitou and Sunlinksea. Both are characterised by impressive ginkgo groves and towering bamboo stands. At Sitou, a walkway in the trees swings seven storeys above the forest, providing stunning views of the preserve and of neighbouring tea plantations. Nantou is the original home of oolong tea growing in Taiwan, and teahouses are nearly as numerous in the countryside as temples. The region's crisp mountain air and the various water-based recreation opportunities available on Lake Sun Moon have made Nantou a centre for eco-tourism. Various lodges, campsites and spas are available as alternatives to Nantou hotels, which tend to be comfortable but modern and somewhat plain. Many monasteries and temples in the highlands offer meals and overnight accommodation as well.other spellings: nantouhotels, nantuo otel, nentou hotell, nantuo hote, nantour hotes
