Introduction to Miaoli, Taiwan

A diamond-shaped county in the mountainous north central region of Taiwan, Miaoli is hiking country. Its abundant forests are traversed by rivers and marked by trails, easy and not. Reached by bus and high-speed rail link, Lions Head Mountain is the most popular outdoor recreation spot in the region. Known for its spectacular cliffs and gorges, the mountain is home to no fewer than 18 temple monasteries, several of which offer meals and accommodation to hikers. The county is the centre in Taiwan for Chinese Hakku culture - forest tribes, largely camphor- and tea-growers, who have developed over the centuries a distinctive proficiency in woodcarving. At the south end of Miaoli, the village of Sanyi is home to a community of carvers, a museum tracing the history of their craft, and several shops where samples are available for purchase. Hotels in Miaoli include at least one luxurious hot springs spa, a dude ranch, and a number of more modestly priced options.
