Located on the northern fringes of the Arabian Peninsula, Syria enjoys a complex, colourful and important history. Syria’s geographical and political position in Cold War history, its roles in conflict with Israel and its involvement in the politics of Lebanon and Palestine have for decades prevented Syria from enjoying a flourishing tourism industry, especially amongst Westerners. This is a great shame, as Syria enjoys a wealth of important historical sites.
