Introduction to Ma’loula, Syria
On the jagged mountainside of the volcanic plateau that dominates southern Syria, Ma'loula is an anthropological jewel for its linguistic and religious longevity.

Ma'loula and its surrounding towns are the only remaining place where a dialect of Aramaic is still spoken.

Its inhabitants are both Christians and Muslims, though the latter are unique in the region for having never been Arabised.

The Greek Catholic Mar Sarkis and the Greek Orthodox Mar Thecla are two of the earliest built monasteries in the country.

Mar Sarkis was built on pagan temple grounds and has retained its 5th century Byzantine architecture, while Mar Thecla contains the remains of an important Seleucid princess.

Ma'loula hotels are surrounded by churches, convents, mosques, shrines and sanctuaries in various states of use and ruins.

The town is an important pilgrimage site in both Christianity and Islam.

Ma'loula is located northeast of Damascus, which has been inhabited continuously since 10,000 BC, making it the oldest living city in the world.
