In the fertile region of northwestern Syria, the city of Idlib and its surrounding area are important both historically and economically. Olive, grape and tomato vineyards combined with wheat and cotton fields make Idlib a major agricultural area. There are many Dead Cities surrounding Idlib, making up a small portion of the 700 abandoned Byzantine settlements in the region that date back to 4th century when the land was a part of Antioch. In the region, there are also many tels, or buried cities, of various depths resulting from periods of human occupation and abandonment over many centuries. From Idlib hotels, visitors can explore the ancient city of Ebla, the historic capital of the powerful kingdom of Ibrium. The city was particularly active in the late 3rd millennium BC and again in 18th century BC, with the former period having produced the famous Ebla tablets written in cuneiform and Sumerian script. The neighbouring city of Aleppo is one of the oldest in the world and currently the second largest in Syria; its citadel sits upon a central hill, boasting amazing views of the city.
