Introduction to Hama, Syria
In the Orontes Valley, tourists come from all over to see the famous waterwheels of Hama. The world's largest Norias, an ancient type of waterwheel, sits in the city along the River Orontes, with many other wheels found further along the riverbanks. The large souk in town is filled with a little bit of everything, from produce to shoes. Azem Palace, similar to the royal residence in Damascus, is a beautiful building tucked away in the centre of the old town. The old quarter was mostly destroyed by the bombardment it faced during the Hama massacre in 1982. The museum here is particularly interesting, having pictures of the city before the massacre. While there are no tangible remains of the old citadel, the open space on the former citadel site is popular for weekend picnics and its lovely views of the city.
