Introduction to Bosra, Syria
Bosra is a Roman city in southern Syria, close to the Jordan border, that dates as far back as 14th century BC. As one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country, Bosra has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for its remnants of Roman, Byzantine and Muslim civilisations. The ancient ruins here are notable for their use of black basalt stones, which create a stark contrast against the seas of pale sand. The Roman theatre here is particularly well-preserved and the only one of its kind; it is still used every year for a national music festival. Bosra hotels are located in the small inhabited village that survives from the city's ancient heyday when it had 80,000 inhabitants. Additional sites include Christian churches, antique mosques and Nabatean and Roman monuments. One of the oldest intact buildings of Islamic history is the l-Omari Mosque of Bosra. Beautiful Roman bridges, the Kharaba and Gemarrin, are located just outside this archaeologically-rich city.
