Zurich’s local transport network is well organised and a ticket purchased on any public transport option allows you to switch between them with no additional cost. There are plenty of taxis, but the cost if prohibitive for most people.
Train: Zurich has one central rail station, the Zurich Hauptbahnhof, and all long-distance trains and those from the suburbs terminate here. Within the city, there are ‘S-Bahn’ trains which are sparklingly clean, and a model of Swiss efficiency. There trains are most useful for travel to the suburbs of the mountainous area surrounding the city.
Ferry: with Zurich’s location at the mouth of the River Limmat on the short of Lake Zurich, ferries make up part of the city’s transport network. It’s a very pleasant way to travel and there are services to a number of different towns around the lake operating daily from 09:00 until 19:00. The ferries are part of the ZVV so tickets purchased here also allow you to travel on buses, trams and trains.
Taxi: fortunately, Zurich’s public transport system is very good, so you shouldn’t need to rely on the incredibly expensive taxis. If you do want to travel in this way, you’ll find plenty around town and a vacant taxi will have an illuminated light on the roof, which you can hail on the street.
